Studium Oecologicum: An optional certificate for all students who want to acquire and develop competencies for interdisciplinary work with socio-ecological challenges

At the University of Freiburg, a Studium Oecologicum certificate (working title) is being developed at the initiative of the Student Sustainability Office as part of a one-year project phase. The optional and additional offer will be directed at all matriculated students. This will give all students of the University of Freiburg the opportunity to deal with the socio-ecological challenges of the 21st century in an interdisciplinary way and to develop a sense of social responsibility.

Background and Aims

The promotion of a sustainable and socio-ecologically just transformation of society is a cross-sectional task for all departments of the University. By establishing a Studium Oecologicum, all students are given the opportunity to deal with current and future challenges of the 21st century in an interdisciplinary, scientific, and practical way. On the initiative of the Student Sustainability Office, the Center for Key Qualifications and the Department of Environmental Protection are developing an initial course offering for the winter semester 2021/22 as part of a one-year project phase.

The aim of the project is to incorporate sustainability as an interdisciplinary cross-sectional topic in teaching within an optional and additional course offering. The optional and additional offer is directed at all matriculated students. With the Studium Oecologicum, bachelor students can earn ECTS credits for the BOK area and the supplementary area. The ZfS is responsible for the implementation of the offer.
