Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit: An optional certificate for all students who want to acquire and develop competencies for interdisciplinary work with socio-ecological challenges

At the University of Freiburg, the "Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit" (sustainability certificate) has been developed at the initiative of the Student Sustainability Office for a three years project. This optional and additional programme offers all students of the University of Freiburg the opportunity to develop competencies for sustainable development and learn how to work on sustainability challenges in an interdisciplinary team.

Background and Aims

The promotion of a sustainable and socio-ecologically just transformation of society is a task for all faculties of the University. By establishing the Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit, all students are given the opportunity to deal with current and future challenges of the 21st century in an interdisciplinary, reflexive and practical way. On the initiative of the Student Sustainability Office, the Center for Key Qualifications (ZfS) and the Department of Safety, Environmental Protection and Sustainability have developed a curriculum consisting of three parts, namely foundations, electives and a practice, that are being offered each semester since the winter semester 2021/22 as part of a three-year project phase.

The aim of the project is to incorporate sustainability as an interdisciplinary academic topic in teaching within an optional and additional programme. With the Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit, bachelor students can earn ECTS credits for the BOK area and the supplementary area. The ZfS is responsible for the implementation of the programme.

 

Learning Goals

In the  Zertifikat Nachhaltigkeit, students can:

  • Learn interdisciplinary thinking and working on sustainability challenges
  • develop reflexive skills of individual and collective action
  • develop conceptual and hands-on competencies for sustainable development A programme committee develops the specific goals of the programme, learning content, and programme itself.

 

Target Group

The optional and additional offer is directed at all students who are matriculated at the University of Freiburg.

About the Programme

The programme covers a total of 14 ECTS credits and is comprised of three parts, namely foundations, electives and practice (Grundlagen-, Wahl-, und Praxisbereich).
